MAY 2008 Newsletter
Tired In A Good Way

Welcome Home everyone. I (Deatri) pray you all made it back safely and have caught up on your rest. Even though I was running around the majority of the time, I had a ball and hope you did also.

I wasn’t going to put out a newsletter this month because the newsletter date is changing from mid month to the first of the month, but there are quite a few house cleaning things I need to cover and don’t want to take up the normal newsletter space to do it.

As promised, below is the link to a 10 question survey. Please take a few minutes to help us improve the conference.

RSJ 2008 Attendee Survey

California or Bust

RSJ 2009 is in California and will be a blast. I’ve just received the new text for the website and hope to have the site updated by 1 June. I’ll send out an e-blast when the new content is up.

Unfortunately, the California team has hit a tad bit of a bump and needs a book club to work with them. Now don’t panic. It’s all gooooood.

California book clubs, please contact me at deatri@romanceslamjam.org if you are interested in helping host this fantastic event. The ground work has already been laid. Come on, don’t be scuuuuurd.

Memory Book and Pictures

It’s only been a few weeks since the Slam Jam and I know you have stories to tell about the 2008 Slam Jam. Send them on so I can include them in our RSJ Memory Book. I’m also creating an electronic photo album of the Slam Jam. I saw cameras a plenty.

If you could send me photos you took at the Slam Jam on a CD to
Deatri King-Bey, P.O. Box 822, Tolleson AZ 85353 or send me to a link with the photos, I’d be very appreciative.

Also if you have photos of previous Slam Jams, I’d like those. Just please let me know the years of the photos. Our 15 Year anniversary will be here before you know it and you know I have some serious stuff up my sleeves for you (SMILE). Thanks a whole lot and a bunch.

Emma Awards Process

Attendees (readers, authors, editors, agents) nominate the finalists, then attendees  are the judges and an outside accountant is thrown in the mix to ensure everything is above board.

I’d like to thank 2008’s RSJ judges for doing an outstanding job. THANK YOU!!!!

There were enough judges to have three for each category this year. Next year we’d like to have four judges for each category. Please consider being a judge. Those of you who were judges last year will have priority to be a judge this year.

As a judge, you’d need to read four books in 30 days and fill out a judge sheet for each novel in the category. Hey, we’re all read-a-holics here SMILE. Be a judge.

Also, please keep a list of books you’ve read throughout the year so when it’s time for nominations, you don’t leave anyone out. This year the books that will be eligible are those Black romance books that were published between January 2008 and October 2008. Please notice the dates. This year’s contest will include 10 months worth of books. This is done to accommodate the selection process. In the future the eligible books will be from November present year through October next year.
