A Word From Your 2009 RSJ Hosts |
Want to see a movie in action? Shake hands with Frankenstein or
Beetlejuice. See the car used for From Back to the Future. See how
movies are made. Check out the Terminator special effects show.
Universal Studios, only a mile away from the Beverly Garland Holiday
Inn, is an exciting, action-packed entertainment center with tours
of the backlot and sound stages, as well as restaurants, themed
rides and lot of star power from the Blues Brothers to Jurassic Park
dinosaurs. This is a working studio and you never know who’ll you
run into. Check to see who’s filming and you might find your into
the audience of a popular TV show.
End the day at Universal City Walk for shopping, excellent
restaurants and shows, and tons of fun.
Want something a little different, try Knotts Berry Farm which
started out as a farm stand owned and operated by the Knott Family.
The farm stand turned into a world class attraction with shows,
rides, excellent food and shopping. Walk through the old West with

transported from old mining towns throughout the West.
And for old standbys, there’s always the Disney experience at

Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And don’t forget the evening’s
entertainment. The Main Street Parade of Dreams presents favorite
Disney characters on dazzling floats. And after dark is the fabulous
fireworks spectacular. Get your seat early near the statue of Walt
Disney and Mickey Mouse in the center of the part. Visit

Greatest Place on Earth.
2009 RSJ Committee
The Los Angeles chapter of Passion for Reading will be the host book
club for the 2009 Romance Slam Jam. Thanks to Passion for stepping
up to the plate and helping ensure we’ll all have a great time!
The plans for the 2010 and 2011 events are underway. If your book
club is interested in hosting a future Romance Slam Jam Conference,
please contact Dyanne Davis at
dyanne@romanceslamjam.org for further details. Your club could
be the host for 2012!
It’s only been a few
months since the Slam Jam and I know you have stories to tell about
the 2008 Slam Jam. Send them on so I can include them in our RSJ
Memory Book. I’m also creating an electronic photo album of the Slam
Jam. I saw cameras a plenty.
If you could send me
photos you took at the Slam Jam on a CD to
Deatri King-Bey, P.O. Box 822, Tolleson AZ 85353, email them to me, or send me to a
link with the photos, I’d be very appreciative.
Also if you have
photos of previous Slam Jams, I’d like those. Just please let me
know the years of the photos. Our 15 Year anniversary will be here
before you know it and you know I have some serious stuff up my
sleeves for you (SMILE). Thanks a whole lot and a bunch.

Authors, Authors, Authors |
The authors are signing up to have a great time
at RSJ 2009 in California: Alice Wootson, AlTonya Washington,
Barbara Keaton, Bridget Midway, Dierdre Savoy, Donna Hill, Dyanne
Davis, Gwynne Forster, Kayla Perrin, Lena Mathews, Leslie Esdaile,
Lisa G. Riley, Marilyn Tyner, Monique Lamont, Rhonda Joseph Jackson,
Victoria Christopher Murray, Wanda Thomas and the list is growing
every day!
Debut authors, debut authors, where forth art thou. I need
everyone’s help in listing our debut Black romance authors for
novels released January 2008 – October 2008. If you know of any
debut authors of Black romance, please email me their names and
titles of their books to
deatri@romanceslamjam.org.

Have you been keeping a list of Black romance
titles you’ve read this year! In a few short months, it will be time
to make your Emma Nominations. For those of you who don’t know, the
Emma Awards is the premier awards event for readers and authors of Black
romance.
This year you may make nominations if you attended last year’s
Romance Slam Jam Conference and/or are registered for this year’s
conference. Eligible books are Black romances published from January
2008 – October 2008. I’ll be asking you to send in your nominations
the month of November.
We are seeking judges for the contest. If you attended last year’s
conference and/or are registered for this years conference, you are
eligible to be a judge. You’ll just need to commit to reading the
category novels (4-5 novels) in 30 days, to judge fairly and fill
out the judge sheet for each novel.
If you are interested in being a judge, please send an email to
emmas@romanceslamjam.org with the name you registered for the
conference under last year or this year if you have already
registered. Who your two favorite Black romance authors are, and do
you want to be a judge or alternate judge. Alternate judges have
less than 30 days to read the required novels.
Last year we had 25 judges and would love to have at least 35 this
year, so….you know you are going to read the books anyway…come on,
be a judge!
In 2010 we will celebrate our RSJ Crystal
Anniversary by hitting the high seas April 10, 2010! Five fun-filled
days on a Carnival Cruise with Ports of Call in Grand Cayman, Ocho
Rios and Jamaica. Our theme is Back to the Future with Rochelle
Alers as our keynote speaker! We will celebrate our past and toast
our future with fun in the sun, a cocktail party, relaxing by the
pool, Karaoke and island adventures! Let’s not forget the Emma
Awards! We will also be holding book discussions on some of our
favorite Black romance novels over the last fifteen years. So dust
off your oldies but goodies. I’ll send out a request for a reading
list much closer to the conference.
Get ready folks! If everything works out, we’ll be booking the
reservation on August 4, 2008. This is important because once we
book the reservation you will have 30 days, (by September 2nd 2008)
to pay a $25 refundable deposit. After you pay the initial deposit
you will have approximately 1 year to pay an additional $150 payment
and the balance will be due a few months before departure. If you
change your mind, the full amount will be refundable until a few
months before the cruise.
We will issue complete information once the reservation is made. We
are booking early to reserve a good price. With the economy and gas
prices as they are, we don’t want to leave anything (inflation) to
chance.
These rates are tentative until our reservation is made and are
therefore subject to change (rates include gratuity, taxes and
fees).
Interior Cabins
1st and 2nd persons $534.43
3rd and 4th persons $379.43
Ocean View Cabins
1st and 2nd persons $604.43
3rd and 4th persons $399.43
Cabins with Balcony
1st and 2nd persons $704.43
3rd and 4th persons $419.43
Usually the hotel room cost around $150 a night, with tax $170,
totaling approximately $510 for three nights, and this does not
include the cost of your meals. With a cruise you get five glorious
days at sea, Jamaica, food, and entertainment for around the same
price as a hotel. What a bargain!! Also, since we do not have to pay
for events to be catered, the conference registration fee will only
be $50 to cover the Emma’s, T-shirts, tote bags etc.
Stay tuned

Each year the Romance Slam Jam is able to keep
it’s registration fees low by acquiring sponsors. If your company or
you know of a company that would like to sponsor one of the Romance
Slam Jam events, please contact
deatri@romanceslamjam.org.
How did you like the Souvenir Program last
year? Simply BEAUTIFUL if I do say so myself (SMILE). We are taking
orders for this years ads. Please refer to the website for details.
That's it for now. If you have questions, I'm
here
