April 2008 Newsletter
This Is It!

Only a few more days until the Slam Jam, and the RSJ 2008 Committee is about ready to BURST!

We consider the conference a family reunion, and we are truly looking forward to welcoming you to Chicago and showing you a good time. Soooo,

COME ON HOME!

RSJ Bookstore

Beverly Jenkins and Bettye Griffin both have novels coming out on April 29 and guess what? Oh yeah, baby, the book vendor says both books will be in the RSJ Bookstore! Look at the list of authors who will be attending this year, go to their websites, view their book pages. So many good authors in one place. Whew howdy! The RSJ Bookstore will have a few titles from the majority of the authors attending. I haven’t bought a book in months waiting for this event. Well I just lied. I haven’t bought a romance book. LOL.

Talk To Dyanne

Hey all, this is Dyanne.

So you want to be in pictures? Are you ready for your close-up?  Did I just scare you? LOL.  Don't be scuuuurd  (as Deatri would say). Anyway we've promised to give you everything except money at this year’s Romance Slam Jam, and we're coming pretty darn close.

On Friday Dionne Hill from Bolingbrook Community Television will come, and she will tape the luncheon to air on my local cable show, The Art of Writing. Since Bolingbrook Cable Television is just about ready to go live anyone with a computer can view it. Continue Reading...

Let's Eat

Don't pretend you didn't want to hear this information. We're family and we like to eat. Period. So I'm going to whet your appetites by telling you when and what you will be eating so you will then know how to adjust your book and raffle ticket buying accordingly. (Smile) Continue Reading...

Miriam and I attended our first Slam Jam in 2000 in Orlando.  The whole experience was like a dream.  Our books were featured and we thought we were celebrities--that's how nice everyone was.   That experience is what kept J.M. Jeffries going.  This was the first conference where we were able to meet our readers face to face.  And we have to admit, although it was nerve-wracking, it was as insightful as it was thrilling.  Because sometimes when a writer sits in their cave writing their books, they forgot other people besides the reader is going to read them. I remember my first Romance Slam Jam in Shreveport , La. It was my first convention, and I had no idea what to expect. I was coming down to breakfast the first morning, and trying to look like I belonged there even though I didn’t know a soul.

Searching for the restaurant I approached a lady standing alone to ask direction. As she turned to me I realized it was Brenda Jackson. She smiled and let me know she was just heading in to breakfast herself, and so we went in and chose a table. As we were sitting there, Lynn Emery joined us.

Although, I’d been in publication almost a year by that time, I’d been reading these ladies for many years longer than that! I really tried to be nonchalant about having breakfast with a couple of my SHEroes, but I was absolutely thrilled to pieces!

I whipped out my cell phone right then and there and dialed up my sister, the person who introduced me to romance novels, and bragged that I was having breakfast with Brenda Jackson and Lynne Emery!

Whether you’re a reader or an author, there is definitely a sense of family and connectivity that you get with the Slam Jam, a closeness that I have never seen in other conventions, not the least of which is a chance to have breakfast with a couple of your favorite authors!

I’m looking forward to mixing and mingling with all of you at the Romance Slam Jam. This is my first time at the conference, but I am a Windy City Woman (South Side!) so I’m going to make sure that you all have a great time in my hometown, the wonderful city of Chicago.

I’m representing the grittier and more drama filled side of love, tainted love so to speak. For those who like to take a walk on the wild side, check out my novels “The Rolexxx Club”, “Queen of Miami” and “Heaven’s Fury” with 50 Cent. Erotica fans will love my novella, “Diva’s Need Love Too”, in the anthology “These Are My Confessions” which was co-written with Joy/Deja King, Electa Rome Parks, and Cheryl Robinson.

Get to know me at MetaSmith.com, MySpace.com/MetaSmith and YouTube.com/MetaSmith.

See you soon!

Peace & Positive Vibes,

I know you have all made your hotel reservations and paid your registration fees. Thank you very much for being so orderly. The RSJ Registration desk will open for business on Wednesday 30 April in the hotel lobby from 4-6 pm. I HIGHLY suggest you register Wednesday to avoid the rush Thursday morning. A few months ago I said we would start running Thursday morning and not stop until after the Pass the Torch on Sunday morning. Welllllll, the first reader sessions start on Thursday morning at 9 am. The 9 am guest authors are Beverly Jenkins, Savannah J. Frierson, Elaine Overton, Nathasha Brooks-Harris and the author of the hour for the Intimate Session is AlTonya Washington. I wasn’t joking. We are RUNNNNING come 9 am Thursday.

RSJ Schedule

Here are the two most asked questions I’m receiving now:

Must I purchase the books at the Slam Jam Bookstore in order to have them signed at the RSJ Book signing?  No. We encourage you to bring those books you’ve had for years and have them signed.

Is there a limit to books I can have signed? The only limit is time. Now for me the issue is I have all of Beverly Jenkins, Rochelle Alers and various other authors books and haven’t had one signed (shhh, don’t tell anyone). I’ve been to many Slam Jams and the thought of carrying stacks of books around does not appeal to me (which is why I have so few signed books).

Well thanks to Toni Bonita and her fantastic book club, they reminded me of autograph books. Sooo, taking their tip, I’m creating a scrap book/autograph book for RSJ 2008. When I’m done I’ll have photos and signatures a plenty.

Finally, don't forget about our fundraiser for the Unsung Heroes Living History Project. This is a great cause and you can win some FANTASTIC prizes.

That's it for now. If you have questions, I'm here deatri@romanceslamjam.org

See you at the Slam Jam
