Writing Romance in Different Genres by Natalie Dunbar ![]() I was first published by Genesis Press in 2000 with my romance, Best of Friends. As a new writer I was told that you were supposed to pick one genre and stick with it. It was what publishing houses and readers wanted and expected. It supposedly helped build your name and add to your readers. This was reinforced through the years on several fronts. Still, I had my first written book, a paranormal romance in a drawer, just waiting for the promised revisions. Was I just supposed to forget about that? I read and write in a variety of genres including romance, romantic suspense, action adventure, and paranormal romance. I haven't hit the big-time, but I'm still out there and I'm now published in romance, romantic suspense, action-adventure, and paranormal romance through Genesis, BET, Silhouette Books, and Parker Publishing. If you ask me how I managed it, I would have to say it was a combination of times changing, persistence, and writing what I loved. These are trying times for writers. Most of the writers I know are glad to have a day job for a steady source of income. If you're going to write, there has to be something in it for you besides the anticipated royalties. In January, my second paranormal novella, The Golden Wolf, was published in the Parker Publishing werewolf romance anthology, Vegas Bites Back. I hope you'll all pick up a copy and bring it to Slam Jam for me to sign. This is the second installment for my heroine, Kellie Monroe.
