SEPTEMBER 2008 RSJ Committee Update
Countdown to Romance Slam Jam 2009 has begun! I for one can’t wait for these next six months to dwindle down so I can hang out with all the wonderful author and readers who love black romance as much as I do! I mean, who often do you get to see authors like LA Banks, Rochelle Alers, Kayla Perrin, and many others under one roof? Bring your books and a pen because you’ll have the chance to get autographs from some of the hottest black romance authors around.

The Beverly Garland Hotel is ready and willing for room reservations, but be sure to let them know you’re with Romance Slam Jam. Plan on coming early or staying after the conference ends? There are tons of attractions right around the corner from the conference hotel. Below are a few examples of what Los Angeles has to offer!

Los Angeles is the true field of dreams. Who would have thought a hundred years ago that this city would become the reigning center of the entertainment industry? With a half dozen studios in the area surrounding the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn is Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers Studios, NBC Studios and CBS Studios. Interested in a live TV taping. Los Angeles isn’t all glitz and glamour with paparazzi hunting their next celebrity, but has its serious side. Take a trip to the past at the Los Angeles Tar Pits which has been yielding secrets of the distant past since 1913 when the first excavations unearthed over a million fossilized bones. Visit Pit 91and to see a modern excavation still revealing the past. Take a jaunt through the George C. Page Museum for a close look a saber tooth tiger, and extinct camel, ancient bison and long extinct giant sloths and discover what they reveal about the geology of the Los Angeles basin. Range a little further and take a look at the different cultures that have been the bore of Los Angeles life for over 200 years. Olvera Street is considered the birthplace of the city with 27 historic buildings and a taste of the culture that was Los Angeles with award winning restaurants serving authentic Mexican cuisine, outdoor entertainment and tours of the original pueblo built in 1781. Discover the rich history of Chinatown. Shop the unique and eclectic shops offering everything from ginseng tea to silk slipper. Visit one of the galleries for a look at work by local artists.
