October  2009 Newsletter
It's All Good

It took entirely too long, but as you see, I have my computer back. I apologize for the lateness of this newsletter. Let’s just say I had severe technical difficulties , but it’s all good. Let's get a quick rundown on what's going on.

Romance Slam Jam 2010 Book Signing is ON AND POPPIN’. The signing will be at the Wyndham Miami hotel (the conference hotel) starting at 6 pm. We’ll also be having RSJ 2010 registration at the same time. Soooo, look at the author list and bring those books on over that you’d like signed.

Emma Nominations begin next month. Have you been keeping track of your favorite Hero, Heroine? How about Debut authors? Don’t wait until the last minute. Now is a great time to head on back to those book shelves and refresh your memory.

Beverly Jenkins and Brenda Jackson have both received the RSJ Lifetime Achievement Award and will no longer be participating in the Emma Awards.

How the Emma Awards work

During the month of November, nominations for Black Romance novels published between January 2008 thru October 2009 will be accepted from people who are registered for the current and previous Romance Slam Jam Conference and/or the RSJ Cruise. Sorry, but e-books are not eligible. We know that some e-books come out in print. Once they are released in print, the print version is eligible and the publishing date is the date it was released in print.

Destination Romance, the anthology written in honor of the Romance Slam Jam and whose proceeds go to charity, is on track for release. First each novella will be released as an e-book series this month (October). So those of you who have been wanting to experiment with e-books, here is your chance to enjoy a few great reads and do good in the hood. Then in time for Christmas, the anthology comes out in print. Please help spread the word about this fantastic anthology and the South Side Help Center (SSHC).

African American women are the fastest growing population being diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS. We can't save the world, but it feels good to know our love of reading and writing may be able to save one of our sisters, mothers, aunts, nieces, daughters, friends.

Again, the authors, publisher, type setter, editor and cover designer are all forgoing any payment for Destination Romance. All proceeds (minus printing and distribution) go directly to SSHC.

Stay tuned for a special edition RSJ Newsletter with ordering details.

Last month we discussed
Always a Knight by Wayne Jordan. Thanks to Wayne for hanging out with us. As always, we had a great time.

Next up we are discussing Body by Night by Zuri Day by starting 16 October. So dig out those copies and join in on the fun. Zuri will be there.

Several of us have also read or are reading Captured by Beverly Jenkins. I have a feeling we'll be squeezing a discussion of it in the near future.

We have discussions on various topics throughout, so please drop on by any ol' time. Tell us what you are reading and what reading events you've been going to. Recommend a little somethin' somethin'.

Come on and join in on the fun. I know you want to talk about some of these books we're reading with others who enjoyed them.

Our online book club is hosted at http://www.shelfari.com. You'll need to sign up for a membership, which is free, and join the Black Romance Book Club.

The Ten Pound Challenge! By Lutishia Lovely

Can you believe that October is here, and that in a few short months we’ll be welcoming in 2010? Me neither! But you know what this means? It meansBody By Night that if I’m going to parade around the Princess next April in my thong bikini , I’d better start slimming down my ass-ets! :) Oh, close your mouth, I’m not really planning on packing the thong for public viewing, but I do want to lose about ten pounds before the Romance Slam Jam cruise. Doesn’t sound too hard, huh? That’s less than two pounds a month. Easy! Piece of cake! No, probably shouldn’t mention cake right about now. Piece of lettuce? Actually, I’m planning to lose these pounds in about two months, and I’m going to take a page from D’Andra Smalls book. Actually D’Andra Smalls is a character in a book: Body By Night by Zuri Day. See, girlfriend ends up in emergency with high blood pressure and type II diabetes and as a result, decides to change her life by changing her lifestyle. She decided to not diet, however, but rather make some simple yet profound changes to the way she ate.  Continue Reading...
