A Word From Your 2009 RSJ Hosts

On March 12-14 Slam Jam 2009 the Romance Slam Jam is being held at the beautiful, historic Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, which provides a shuttle to various local attractions such as The Walk of Fame, City Walk, Universal Studios, shopping, and much more. We have a beach party themed welcome party planned, tons of reader and writer workshops and the fantastic L.A. Banks as the keynote speaker.

Los Angeles is going to be a blast and we have no doubt Romance Slam Jam’s Red Carpet Romance will be a smashing success. As we iron out more details we’ll pass them on to you along with small articles about things to do and see while you’re in Los Angeles and post updates on those authors attending, workshops being planned, the Emma Awards and possible activities.

Be sure to visit BeverlyGarland.com for more information on the hotel and follow some of their links to various sightseeing opportunities in Los Angeles.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The two most popular streets in Los Angeles contain all the ambience that makes this city the city of the Angels and the city of stars.  Looking for a little star power, don’t miss the Hollywood Walk of Fame with the stars of the most famous people in Hollywood and the most obscure.  From Angela Basset to Dorothy Dandridge, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of the most identifiable landmarks in the world honoring movie actors, radio personalities, stage and TV performers, directors, signer songwriters and other show business personalities, including animal performers Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.  Only a short hop from the Beverly Garland.  Check it out at

Memory Book and Pictures

It’s only been a few weeks since the Slam Jam and I know you have stories to tell about the 2008 Slam Jam. Send them on so I can include them in our RSJ Memory Book. I’m also creating an electronic photo album of the Slam Jam. I saw cameras a plenty.

If you could send me photos you took at the Slam Jam on a CD to
Deatri King-Bey, P.O. Box 822, Tolleson AZ 85353, email them to me, or send me to a link with the photos, I’d be very appreciative.

Also if you have photos of previous Slam Jams, I’d like those. Just please let me know the years of the photos. Our 15 Year anniversary will be here before you know it and you know I have some serious stuff up my sleeves for you (SMILE). Thanks a whole lot and a bunch.

A Word from the Winner

For as long as I can remember I’ve written poetry and short stories, in that I’m not very different from most writers.  From the time I read the stories of King Arthur, The Lord of the Rings, and The Dragons of Pern, I knew where my heart lay.  I’ve always been fascinated with magical realms and dragons, and collected any story these were featured in.  However, for me, something was always missing in those stories, and for years I told myself someday I’d write the type of fantasy I wanted to read.  Continue Reading
Unsung Heroes

You helped raise $900 for the Unsung Heroes Living History Project!  Thank you all for coming out and supporting this worthy cause. Please take a moment to read a letter from the Project Coordinator.

On behalf of the Unsung Heroes Project History Project, I would like to thank the Romance Slam Jam for the generous donation to our organization.

The Unsung Heroes Living History Project was founded in 2000 because after learning my grandmother (Margarita Hernandez, an African-American Latina) was a Riveter on the USS Franklin Roosevelt, I wanted to learn more about blacks in the military, but couldn't find adequate information. I began to invite African-American veterans and their families to share their stories, photos, memorabilia, etc., as part of a continuous oral history project. The response has been phenomenal, but the invitation is still open for those who served (whether it is during conflict or during peacetime; or whether it is in military or in a civilian capacity). The Love Boat

If you are not at work, click the following link. It is music to put you in the mood for what I (Deatri) have to say. SMILE. Mood Music

Aaaaah yeah, baby, that's it. Has the music taken you back to the good old days when all one had to do to find love was take a cruise on the Love Boat.

In 2010 we, the Romance Slam Jam family, will be celebrating our fifteen year anniversary on a cruise! We have already started the preliminary work and hope to have the cruise dates and prices out by Aug 2008.

For those of you who have never been on a cruise, you are in for a treat. For those of you who have been on a cruise, you are in for a treat. For those of you who are afraid of cruises, don't be scuuuuuurd. You'll be with family and we'll be having so much fun you'll forget about your fear.

Go ahead and start getting those passports now! This is going to be an EVENT you will be sorry if you miss.

We are keeping the price low and the FUN HIGH!

Stay tuned

Did you all have a good time with the folks from Affaire de Coeur at the Slam Jam! Louise and Bonnie were fantastic and have been supporting Black romance for years. If you haven't ordered your subscription to Affaire De Coeur, don't miss out. This is the last month of the special rate.

We have a new sponsor for the newsletter this month. A Black owned business called TCE Gifts. With Father's day around the corner, be sure to check out this site. You know how we do. Support those who support us.

I'm updating our website with the 2009 Slam Jam information, but I'm waiting on a little more information. I'll probably be receiving the final information in the next week or so. I'll send out an e-blast when the updates are complete.

That's it for now. If you have questions, I'm here deatri@romanceslamjam.org

See you in CALIFORNIA at the Slam Jam
